Dream Holiday – MALDIVES

Maldives is a place that has the nicest beach and resorts to stay. This is the reason why I’ve chosen Trixa Beach as my dream holiday in second life.

The sand at maldives looks soo soft and clean. The waters are soo blue and clear. It seem like a super nice place to relax and enjoy.

There are alot of nice beaches in different parts of the world too and the reason why i chose maldives is that my gf also hope to go to maldives.

Dream Holiday – Virtual World (SECOND LIFE)

I’ve always like the beach, the sun, the sand, the waters. Maybe it’s because I like to tan. I love to walk at the soft sand, look at the waters and relax at the beach.

In second life, i chose Trixa Beach – Lover’s Paradise. I chose this place is because firstly, it’s a beach and i love the beach. Secondly, by reading the name of the place, it’s for lovers and I’d love to bring my girl to there and enjoy ourselves and relax at the beach.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In fact, I didn’t really have the chance to enjoy myself in the virtual world beach as it was night time, everythign was dark. But the skies was full of shiny bright stars and im sure my gf will like it! However, even thou it was night time, the beach still seems nice, I’m sure the beach would look great during the day time and I can’t wait to visit the Trixa Beach again during the daytime!

EIR wk7 – ‘Invisible Web (Database)’

This week, we were introduced to the the functionality of invisible web(database). The first database i used in the EIR lesson is ‘Ebscohost’ from TEMASEK POLY school website. As it indicate lots of categories of different journals and articles. When i  first saw the Ebscohost it indicate lots of categories of ‘search’ for me to use and which is also a good start for me so that i can directly choose what types of return result that i want. Next, the Ebscohost provide me with the Boolean operators and the space for the keywords between each boolean operator, allowing me to save the inconvenience and make life easier for searching. The return result provides multiple relevant article related to my topic as it  have show words on impact of youth on social networking. Especially the first few articles can be consisted the most relevant to my topic itself.

 

Next I would use E-books databases ITPRO from TEMASEK POLY website. However, i didn’t receive any relevant return result from my search. But there are still lots of browse topics allows me to see and choose its topic categories. In conclusion, even though i didn’t get any relevant return results from there but i at least have a better understanding of what is an invisible web (database).

EIR wk 6 – ‘DOGPILE’

This week, we need try out this search engine, DOGPILE. After hearing the name, i find it funny as it is called dogpile! hahha I’ve never heard of this search engine before. All along, I’ve only tried out YAHOO, GOOGLE and BING. The most frequent search engine that I’ve been using would probably be GOOGLE. As it is user-friendly, and I always managed to get the info that i wanna search for very quickly and easily. I seldom use bing but it’s not because it’s not user-friendly, but somehow I’m not used to it.

So after trying out ‘DOGPILE’, the search results is somehow similar to bing.

 

As for the results, I think that I’m still not familiar or used to using dogpile. The results shown after search is very wide and not very relevant to the info I want to search as compared with google and yahoo. However, dogpile has this selection which is yellowpages which google, yahoo and bing don’t have.

But, I find that dogpile is BETTER than bing. Therefore, in the future, I will add dogpile into one of my favourite search engine too! As search results from google and yahoo is similar, but search results from google and dogpile is not very similar. So, by using this two search engines, I can collect more info!

EIR wk 5 – Effective Internet Research

Today i learnt about a more effective way to do research. At first when i go through the slide, I was COMPELETELY LOST!! I don’t really understand about the ‘common boolean operators’!!! Normally when I google  something, it is soo easy. But after going through the slides, it somehow make me feel that google-ing something can be sooo hard!! However, when I finally understand it, it was actually pretty useful and in fact, some much more effective. There are actually a few key things to do when u google your research.

Firstly, boolean operators includes “AND”, “OR” and “AND NOT”. If u include “AND” inside your search, the results would narrowed down and the search results would only show the phrases that u searched for. As for using “OR” in your search, this will expand your search, including the words that you’ve googled. Whereas for “AND NOT”, this will only restrict your search. However, most search engines uses “AND” as their default operator! But some search engines also uses “+” and “-” signs.

Secondly, combining the different operators by using brackets () to force the order of search. By using the brackets, search will be filtered and thus, results will be more close to what the user wants to research on. This will be more helpful and effective.

So in conclusion, linking words with boolean operators and the use of parentheses, research will be alot more easy and effective. This smart way of search is actually kind of easy to understand. As it is just like a way of solving sums. It is like a method to solve things and you just gotta remember how to use it. Each time when you use this method, sooner or later, you will be used to it, thus, everytime you wanna goggle somthing, you will naturely use this method to google things.

And after trying it, the search results is VERY EFFECTIVE AND USEFUL!!! It showmore relevant to the things I wanna googled and also shorten the research process time! As to compare with the normal way of google-ling, this is soo much faster and relevant whereas the normal way alwasy show alot of search results and irrelevant things!

EIR WK 4 E-Shopping @ Second Life

I created an account in Second Life after blogging my first blogpost. I mingled around to see what’s exactly Second Life is about. There’s a tutorial of how to use Second Life so i followed the guide. After following the tutorial, I find that the game is kind of boring and I’m lazy to explore around. Just as I was about to quit the application, someone talked to me! This user kept on talking to me in FRENCH and I TOTALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND A SINGLE WORD!!!! So i figured out that she was from FRANCE(my gf love tt place as all her dream bags are there.) Then i replied her that I don’t know what is she talking about and i left the game.

Today, i logged in to Second Life again. I kind of forget my username as the last time i logged in was when i just created and it was 2 weeks ago. But after awhile, I managed to recall the username, so I was logged in! After awhile of using it, I don’t understand what the tutorial is talking about. This is because, the tutorial is in WINDOWS format and I’m using MAC. So, i ignored the tutorial to end my confusion of the game, hence, I decided to just click any button that I think is interesting, which i think it’s better!

I came to Welcome Island and after walking around for a few secs, i saw a glass window of marine life.. I’ve always like marine life as i think that it’s soo carefree n also I like to swim too! Also, there’s  alot of other users around here. When i wanted to talk to them after print screen, they went away alrdy. So I continue to walk around and I FOUND SOMETHING THAT I LIKE. A PARROT!!! I always think that parrot is a cute bird. i remembered once, when I was outside with my friends. We passed my a bird shop, there was a parrot keep on scolding vulgarities! hahahah I wonder what did the owner of the parrot taught it… Bad owner!!

After walking around, I was feeling kind of bored, so I went to Second Life’s marketplace. It is  a place where we can do all sorts of shopping there. From animals to gadgets to business to building components and many other more!!! In fact, you can find EVERYTHING there!!! So i select L$0 – L$10 range as i do not have any Linden dollars..

This are the items that i bought. It was fun shopping around except that all this aren’t real… If only all these were real.. hhahahha It would be damn SHIOK!!! So after purchasing, we need to check out. I’ve print screen the steps. So these are the steps:

Then we need to click place your order to confirm and then our purchase will be scheduled for delivery. But I don’t know how it will bedelivered!! hahahha But anyway, this e-shopping experience was fun!.

Lastly, to compare e-shopping in Second Life and the real world, there are both good n bad things. The good thing about shopping in Second Life is that you can find $0 things whereas in the real world, U CAN’T! Also, shopping in Second Life, you can find all sorts of things in one website! As for shopping in the real world, you will get the real product to yourself and not to the character!! hahahha And also, shopping in the real world, purchasing things is easier, as there isn’t soo much steps.

Overall, this is what I feel after playing Second Life and the shopping experiences in market place by Second Life and also comparing the differences between e-shopping in Second Life and in the real world.

EIR Week 3 (10 May 2011)

Today, we were given a short briefing before we begin to do work. Basically the briefing is trying to tell us what is this ‘CDS’  all about and what can we do to score well for this ‘CDS’. The briefing really interest me about what we are going to do and learnt throughout this ‘CDS’ especially things like Second Life and Blog.  Its like writing a self-reflection on a journal where everybody can read and comment that journal of yours.

After the briefing, we had our lecture where i learnt about the different category of internet resource. They are classified in Business/marketing, Informative, Advocacy, News, Personal and Entertaining. From there i learnt how to identify the web page and their purpose. With the knowledge i just learnt, i’m able to speed up my researching skills for my projects and other purpose.

After doing some simple identification of the website, we had our  first practical assignments to do. The assignment basically wants us to identify & justify the category of the website , based on our our group project topics into different categories and purpose. Doing the practical assignment makes me understand better in identify the different sources.

Last but not least, our final assignment is doing E-SHOPPING. It was awesome and fun assignment! Basically we get to imagine on the items that we can  buy with 500 dollars given!! At that moment i can only thought of the items that i want to buy is simply basketball stuff, (example like NBA cap, NBA jersey), cheap shirt, shorts, shoes and bag!
